So, you have finished your class 12 exams and have decided on a career in engineering? If so, then you should keep in mind that just scoring well in AIEEE is not enough. You need to be able to choose the right engineering college too because a lot depend upon the college that you study from. So, listed below are a few things that you should definitely keep in mind while selecting the best engineering college for yourself:
• Affiliation – There are been plenty of cases when a college has been made to shut down because of false accreditation. Therefore it is imperative that you check out whether the college is affiliated to a proper technical university or not. And also be sure to check out its accreditation.
• Infrastructure – A good infrastructure is an absolute necessity. Give special importance to the laboratories because half the work of an engineering student is done in labs. Therefore, the labs MUST be well equipped with the proper instruments and should have adequate lab assistants too. You might want to check up on the classrooms, the lecture halls and the library too. At times, the pamphlets that one gets from the colleges are altered graphically in order to give a better impression to the prospective students. So, the best way to get the correct information would be to interact with the ex-students.
• Faculty – It is the teaching staff that makes a college, so make sure that the teachers have proper degrees and are experienced. In many new colleges, due to shortage of good candidates, they are even employing BTech pass outs as teachers which they CANNOT according to the AICTE rules. Any basic lecturer MUST have at least an MTech degree. You should get all this information on the institute’s website. In case it isn’t so, I would suggest you call up the authorities and ask for information.
• Pre-placement training and placements – Usually engineering colleges provide the students with proper training and prepare them for the exams and interviews that they will have to face. The recruiters who come for campus interviews are equally important. You need to check out the previous years’ records to get an idea of the companies that have come and the packages that were offered. It is better if you could directly talk to some ex-students regarding this matter because generally the college websites tend to give inflated details.
• Fees and others – Many colleges are not very transparent about the fee structure, specially the lesser known private ones. You should clarify all your doubts beforehand. And lastly don’t forget to check out the hostel facilities, the extra-curricular activities and the location of the college.
Many colleges nowadays have their own pages on social networking sites like Facebook. I would advise you to check those out too, because you are likely to get correct information from there.
And finally, college life is probably the best and the most exciting time of one’s life, so choose carefully and make a wise decision.
John Calvin Maxwell is an author who has written more than 50 books, most of which focus on leadership. An internationally recognized leadership expert and speaker, his books have sold more than 12 million copies! The beauty of his books is that you will feel as if Maxwell himself is talking with you and explaining things lucidly and is at the same time, challenging you to be better person. Here, we have made a list of the 10 most important insights that one can gain from the books of John Maxwell and would like to share them:
1. True leadership is a simple and effective way of influencing people. “Leadership is influence.”, says Maxwell
2. Leadership isn’t a position that can be bought. It’s a process of showing leadership skills that will inspire and influence people to be better versions of them. According to Maxwell, “It’s the leader’s ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others know that you know how – and know that they want to follow you.”
3. Its never too late to achieve something. Don’t wait for motivation to come. “The whole idea of motivation is a trap”, says Maxwell. Instead, just do it!
4. Leadership is actually a collection of skills, all of which can be learned and improved. Though it is of course true, that some people are naturally more skilled to lead, yet it is a wrong assumption that leaders are born. Anyone with the desire can become a leader.
5. As a leader, you have to build trust. You simply cannot follow someone unless you trust him.
6. Success is more like a journey, a path where one should learn to take one day at a time. Maxwell says, “If you can handle today correctly, tomorrow will take of itself.”
7. Maxwell shares a few steps that will help one to succeed everyday – you should make a commitment to grow daily, don’t simply wait for inspiration to come but go and do it, be ready to sacrifice pleasure, plan out your priorities and finally, dream big.
8. Don’t get stymied by failure. It is only the unsuccessful people who are scared of taking risks to try in order to avoid failure. The ones who are successful know the art of using failure to inspire them even further. They never dwell on the negative consequences of failure; instead they focus on the rewards of learning from their mistakes. Maxwell says, “A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.”
9. Try improving your personal growth continuously and Maxwell shares a few principles as to how can one do so – choose a life of growth and start growing today itself, always be focused on self development, never be satisfied with your current accomplishments, always be ready to learn and finally, make a plan for growth and find a way of making that plan successful.
10. Lastly, don’t take yourself too seriously and never equate success with happiness.
Steve Jobs is perhaps the greatest presenter’s of all times! It is not unusual for him to receive a standing ovation after every presentation he makes! They are simply phenomenal – beautifully executed and visually striking. He turns every presentation into a magnificent event that is not only easy to follow but that also entertains and inspires people at the same time.
Listed below are a few tips taken from Steve Job’s presentations on how to be a great presenter:
• Build Tension and Sell the Benefit – Jobs, like a good novelist does not tell the entire story right on the first page, rather he constructs his presentation like a symphony, with buildups and unexpected climaxes; which not only leaves the crowd/audience curious but also excited to know more! Unlike others, Jobs focuses more on the benefits of the product that he is launching rather than going into the statistics. His focus is more on what technology can do for you and less on the technology itself. For example, when he was launching the 30 GB iPod, instead of focusing on the revolutionary technology that it makes use of and mind-numbing statistics, Jobs clearly explained to the audience how exactly will they benefit from it – they would be able to carry 7500 songs, 25000 photos or 75 hours of video!
• Keep it visual – Every slide of his presentation is highly visual. He uses less bullet points and less data and more images in order to keep the audience interested. For example, if he is talking about a new revolutionary chip inside the Mac notebook, a slide in the background will actually show the chip along with the MacBook. Therefore, you should focus more on keeping the slides simple and focused on the key point.
• Practice and practice more – Jobs is known to rehearse his presentation for hours. He takes nothing for granted and reviews each and every slide plenty of time before finally presenting it to the public. You should do the same too. Rehearse your presentation loudly until you are comfortable and confident about presenting it.
• Be honest, exude passion and enthusiasm – If you believe your product is likely to change the world, then say so! Steve Jobs’ never fails to say so! His enthusiasm is infectious! Being a terrific speaker of course helps. But then, Jobs very effectively makes the audience share the same passion that he has for the product he is launching by being enthusiastic, by using plenty of adjectives, like ‘remarkable’, ‘cool’ and finally by being honest.
Steve Jobs never speaks as if he is delivering a lecture, but as if he is telling a proper story, with an introduction and a happy ending. With proper planning and hours of practice, he creates an experience that stays with the audience for a long time. One cannot really be Steve Jobs while giving a presentation; that will only comes with plenty of experience. Probably, he too wasn’t as engaging as he is now a few years back. However, you can try and emulate him. And with time, you too will definitely grow and improve.

After plenty of research, we have come to the conclusion that successful people are always able to reach their targets and accomplish their goals simply because of the different manner in which they do things! Listed below are 5 of the things that they do differently and because of which, they are able to achieve success:
1. Get Specific and Know Exactly How Far You Have Left to Go – Be honest with yourself and set yourself specific goals. Instead of making vague promises like you will sleep less, be clear with yourself and make precise targets, like- you will definitely go to sleep by 12 and wake up by 6 in the morning. Measure your progress regularly. It will give you a good idea of what you have already achieved and what is still left.
2. Be Realistic and Act on your Goals – Set yourself achievable targets. Its no use really, in failing while trying to achieve an impossible target. Instead chalk out a plan from before as most goals, that are worth achieving require time and effort and persistence and of course, most importantly, belief in your ability. And try and achieve the small targets that you set yourself everyday. Don’t keep postponing things. If there was something that had to be done on a Thursday, do it on that day itself instead of thinking that you will finish it on Friday.
3. Always Aim at Getting Better – Try and improve yourself with every target. People tend to think that one’s mental abilities are fixed, but research has shown otherwise. The brain is a muscle which is bound to improve with training and exercise. So, instead of trying to achieve goals that are only about proving yourself, do something where you can develop your skills further and acquire other new skills too.
4. Don’t Give in to Failure and Don’t Tempt Fate – Failures are bound to happen. There probably isn’t a single successful person who hasn’t faced failure at one point of time. However, the ultimately successful person has the strength and willingness to persist in the face of difficulty. Proper planning, good strategies, plenty of effort and persistence are really all it takes to succeed in life. And remember, in trying to achieve success, don’t overdo things. You should have the ability to resist temptation.
5. Strengthen Your Will Power and Focus More on What You Want to Achieve – Lastly, successful people have immense will-power – they have terrific control over their minds. This is something which every person should try and inculcate within themselves. And to do so, take up a challenge that you would rather not do! Or give up something that you like. If may be very difficult in the beginning, but with regular practice and time, there will come a day when doing certain things or resisting them will be much easier for you. And only then will you be able to focus more and ultimately be able to achieve your goals.
